Top Current Pacific Beach Issues
Links mentioned below will become active by the first of April (no fooling). Check back soon.
Crime and Safety
Pacific Beach has astronomical, if not the highest levels in the city, of drunk drivings, other alcohol-related crimes, sexual assaults and property crimes. Click here to learn more about this important issue.
Beach Alcohol Task Force - Implementation Panel
Councilmember Kevin Faulconer proposed a Task Force to look at the overwhelming number of alcohol issues in the beach communities of Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Mission Bay Park and Ocean Beach. The Task Force was composed of community and business leaders. After nine months of meetings approximately 23 consensus items were decided upon for further work. The Implementation Panel, composed of 6 community and business leaders, to focus on the subsequent research and successful implementation of each of these consensus items. Click here to learn more about this panel’s work.
Alcohol on the Beaches and Coastal Parks
After a nine-month BATF process, a major-scale melee broke out on Labor Day on the beach near Reed St. This was the last straw for Councilmember Faulconer who declared his support for alcohol-free San Diego beaches. A grass-roots effort was made by many residents from La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Mission Bay Park and Ocean Beach to permanently remove alcohol from our beaches. San Diego’s City Council decided to approve a one-year alcohol-free beach trial which will expire January 2009. Click here to learn more about this issue.
Parking Meters and Residential Permits
Discover PB, our local Business Improvement District (BID), secured an approximately $25k grant from the San Diego BID Council to hire a consultant to (in my words) tell PB residents and businesses why we need parking meters and potentially residential parking permits. There are many issues which were not addressed by this consultant’s final report. Click here to learn more about this important issue.
Special Events Committee
This committee was formed by Councilmember Faulconer to streamline the special events permit process. There have been issues on how this committee has been formed, insurance, the PB Town Council voting to remove itself from the committee and more. Click here to learn more about this committee as well as proposed alternatives.
Maintenance Assessment District
Discover PB, our local Business Improvement District (BID), is working on implementing a special district roughly bordered by Mission Blvd. from PB Drive to Diamond St. and Felspar St., Garnet Ave. and Hornblend from Mission Blvd. to Everts St.. Property owners in this district would be assessed a annual fee which would be used by the BID to maintain the infrastructure in this district. Read more about this project by clicking here.
Cleaning and Beautification of PB
The PB Town Council has a very active Safe & Beautiful committee (disclosure: I chair this committee) which is focusing on graffiti, trash and litter, art projects and education of our residents and guests through our CLEAN PB campaign. Click here to learn more about the beautification of PB and how you can help.
