This is a compilation of bits from several half-hour segments where the subject matter is related to Pacific Beach, CA.

An open letter to San Diego’s Mayor Sanders and Police Chief Lansdowne

I think our Mayor and Police Chief are mistaken. That is, I think allowing alcohol on our beaches is a year-round public safety issue to both residents, guests from around the region and tourists from around the world.

Fort Lauderdale mayor suggests his beach plan

This letter to the editor was made today by the Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fl:

Rosalie Schwartz’s letter (Sept. 14) about alcohol-free beaches made some good points about the issue of alcohol on the public beaches. However, I need to respond to her statement that “Our beach areas are inundated with out-of-towners who see San Diego as a West Coast Fort Lauderdale.”

Letters to the Editor - Regarding Proposed Alcohol-free Beaches

Drinking at the beach and in the stands

I disagree with your editorial (”Beach booze ban?/Voters should have final say — again,” Sept. 7) questioning whether alcohol on public beaches should be prohibited. Presumably your editorial board was not at Pacific Beach on Labor Day when drunk and disorderly hooligans (once again) took over the beach and street to fight. You do not mention that lifeguards had to leave their stations to patrol the area from the water.

Skater kids harassing homeless person - dystroying her bike

Was down on the boardwalk where I came upon a group of skater kids who were badgering a woman I’ve seen around town for some time. I believe she’s homeless and I think she’s a bit mentally disturbed. The two primary antagonist young men, around 18-20 along with about 8 others  from 15-18 ,  were stomping her  bicycle,  verbally abusing her and picking up their bikes and lunging them at her as if they were going to strike her.  A lifeguard and police arrived to restore order. Her bike was messed up pretty good as they stomped on the spokes, bent the wheels, handlebars and sprockets.

Drunk passed out on my front door - and it’s only 4:45pm

I was helping a neighbor move a sofa into his apartment just now. A woman came walking by my place staggering pretty heavily. She had a seat on my front step and I asked her if she was alright. She was mumbling incoherently. I asked her if she wanted a glass of water - my thinking she was feeling faint. Then I went back inside my place. After she knocked her head on my door a few times I called 911. They connected me to the Emergency Medical people, who in turn dispatched an ambulance.

Beach booze ban? Voters should have final say — again

The San Diego Union - Tribune. San Diego, Calif.: Sep 7, 2007. pg. B.8

As the City Council considers a sweeping prohibition against alcohol at San Diego’s beaches, it should be mindful of the voters’ repudiation of a much more limited booze ban five years ago. Ample public hearings are essential to devising a workable law, and whatever the City Council comes up with should be submitted to voters for their approval or rejection.

Crowd attacks police during Labor Day beach brawl

Beach and Bay Press by SEBASTIAN RUIZ

Standing at the foot of Reed Street in Pacific Beach, Councilman Kevin Faulconer announced that he would work to bring legislation before City Council to ban alcohol on the beach in following the violence that broke out Labor Day in Pacific Beach.

At the Tuesday, Sept. 4 press conference, Faulconer said San Diego County is one of the only counties in California that still allows alcohol on the beaches.

Several hundred people crowded the section of Pacific Beach near Reed Street during the Monday holiday. When officers responded to reports of fighting in the crowd at about 5 p.m., they were pelted with full beer cans, plastic bottles and size D batteries from the crowd, according to Moñica Muñoz of the San Diego Police Department.

Officers immediately removed the offenders from the crowd and called for additional officers to handle the crowd. Mission Boulevard was also closed near Reed Street for part of the evening.

That’s right. I did a survey of every liquor licensee from March 2002 through March 2007 and found that The ABC cited only 16 alcohol licensees in PB, in the last 5 years (March 2002 - March 2007)!
