These Days with Tom Fudge
Today, if you were planning to take a six-pack to Torrey Pines State Beach, just south of Del Mar, you need to change your plans. That’s because today is the first day of a year-long ban on the use of alcohol on that beach. If this sounds familiar, that’s because at the end of last year San Diego imposed a year-long pilot ban on drinking on its beaches.

SAN DIEGO — Those who want a booze ban on San Diego beaches won a preliminary round yesterday in what is certain to be a contentious battle ahead.
I think our Mayor and Police Chief are mistaken. That is, I think allowing alcohol on our beaches is a year-round public safety issue to both residents, guests from around the region and tourists from around the world.
SAN DIEGO — Two men charged in connection with the Labor Day riot at Pacific Beach will soon be headed to trial, NBC 7/39 reported. NEW Video Surfaces.
Santee resident Andrew Terrel, 20, and Ricardo Guzman, 23, of San Diego are among eight people now charged in the incident. Both appeared in court on Thursday.
Council Presidents Scott Peters said yesterday that he will likely endorse banning alcohol on the beach, tipping a City Council majority in favor of a proposal that has gained momentum since beachgoers clashed with police on Labor Day.
This letter to the editor was made today by the Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fl:
Rosalie Schwartz’s letter (Sept. 14) about alcohol-free beaches made some good points about the issue of alcohol on the public beaches. However, I need to respond to her statement that “Our beach areas are inundated with out-of-towners who see San Diego as a West Coast Fort Lauderdale.”
Last week, we asked whether you thought booze should be banned from San Diego city beaches. Based on your calls, surf and suds shouldn’t go together. Take a look.
73% Yes, ban alcohol
27% No, don’t ban alcohol
TOTAL RESPONSES: 1,957
Drinking at the beach and in the stands
I disagree with your editorial (”Beach booze ban?/Voters should have final say — again,” Sept. 7) questioning whether alcohol on public beaches should be prohibited. Presumably your editorial board was not at Pacific Beach on Labor Day when drunk and disorderly hooligans (once again) took over the beach and street to fight. You do not mention that lifeguards had to leave their stations to patrol the area from the water.

As the City Council considers a sweeping prohibition against alcohol at San Diego’s beaches, it should be mindful of the voters’ repudiation of a much more limited booze ban five years ago. Ample public hearings are essential to devising a workable law, and whatever the City Council comes up with should be submitted to voters for their approval or rejection.

Standing at the foot of Reed Street in Pacific Beach, Councilman Kevin Faulconer announced that he would work to bring legislation before City Council to ban alcohol on the beach in following the violence that broke out Labor Day in Pacific Beach.
At the Tuesday, Sept. 4 press conference, Faulconer said San Diego County is one of the only counties in California that still allows alcohol on the beaches.

Several hundred people crowded the section of Pacific Beach near Reed Street during the Monday holiday. When officers responded to reports of fighting in the crowd at about 5 p.m., they were pelted with full beer cans, plastic bottles and size D batteries from the crowd, according to Moñica Muñoz of the San Diego Police Department.
